VSAT Systems stated that its subsidiary Datzap got a license to operate in Costa Rica next three years negotiating with their local government and U.S. trade representatives.

Datzap will provide their customers for visiting VSAT Systems' extended satellite uplink facility and infrastructure using this license. This will provide direct access to the U.S. Internet backbone and ensure the high performance and security, but not get from local resellers of their government's satellite system at present.

Mike Kister, Present of VSAT Systems, stated that this action was not only for VSAT, but for U.S. business. And with this license, they became the first U.S. company entering the marketplace which was controlled by the government for decades. They have already built up teleport infrastructure expecting granting this license. And furthermore they have cost about $1.3 million over the past 18 years in their network operations center in Akron to improve the capacity and redundancy for their systems.

Donald Wayne Jacobs, President of Datzap also stated that at the beginning, their company's target is to provide service through the resellers in rural areas of Costa Rica. But later, they hope to get into population centers. Luckily, the advantageous terrain and existing infrastructure make Costa Rica become an ideal candidate in satellite communications.
